How it works
- Press play to animate the countries with the highest unemployment rates from 1991 to 2024. Bars resort every year with smooth animation.
- Drag the year slider to freeze any moment, or change how many countries are shown.
- Switch Order to “Lowest first” to rank countries from the bottom up.
- The full data table ships with the page, so the ranking works even offline.
Good to know
- The rate follows the ILO definition: people without work but available for and seeking work, as a share of the labour force.
- Figures are modelled estimates, so methods differ slightly from each country's own labour survey.
- Countries without a published figure for a year are left out of that year.

Frequently asked questions
How is unemployment defined here?
The ILO definition: people without work but available for and seeking work, as a share of the labour force. Discouraged workers who stopped looking are not counted.
Why do the numbers differ from national statistics?
These are modelled ILO estimates on one method for all countries, while each country's own survey uses slightly different questions and timing.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The full table ships with the page, so the chart and the year slider work without a network.
