How it works
NOAA’s solar equations give the sun’s declination and the equation of time for the date. Sunrise and sunset are when the sun’s centre is 0.833° below the horizon (refraction plus the solar disc); civil twilight is 6° below.

Tips
- Golden hour starts about an hour before sunset — plan photos around it.
- Above the Arctic Circle the result can be midnight sun or polar night.
- Times are accurate to about a minute; hills and buildings shift what you see.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate are the times?
Within about a minute for most places. Terrain, buildings and unusual atmospheric conditions can change what you actually see.
What is civil twilight?
The period when the sun is less than 6° below the horizon — usually bright enough to be outdoors without lights.
Is my location sent anywhere?
Your coordinates stay in the browser. A city name is sent only to the place search to find its coordinates.
