How it works
- Press play to animate the countries with the largest carbon dioxide emissions from 1990 to 2023. Bars resort every year with smooth animation.
- Drag the year slider to freeze any moment, or change how many countries are shown.
- The full data table ships with the page, so the ranking works even offline.
Good to know
- Values are carbon dioxide from energy, industry, agriculture and waste, excluding land-use change and forestry.
- Countries without a published figure for a year are left out of that year.
- Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Where do the numbers come from?
Carbon dioxide emissions in megatonnes of CO2 equivalent from the World Bank indicator EN.GHG.CO2.MT.CE.AR5, built into the page for the years 1990 to 2023.
What exactly is counted?
Carbon dioxide from energy, industry, agriculture and waste, excluding land-use change and forestry. Other greenhouse gases such as methane are not included. Values are megatonnes of CO2 equivalent.
Why are some countries missing in early years?
Countries without a published figure for a year are left out of that year, so early ranks cover only countries with data.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The full table ships with the page, so the race and the year slider work without a network.
