How it works
The image or letters are drawn on a canvas at every size browsers and phones ask for, then saved as PNG files. The 16, 32 and 48 px versions are packed into a single favicon.ico. Everything is made in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
favicon.ico (16 + 32 + 48) · favicon-32.png · apple-touch-icon.png (180) · icon-192.png · icon-512.png · site.webmanifest
What each file does
- favicon.ico: the classic browser-tab icon. Every browser and Windows still looks for it at the site root.
- apple-touch-icon.png: the icon iPhone and iPad use when someone adds your site to the home screen. It always has a solid background.
- icon-192.png, icon-512.png: Android and installable web apps (PWA) use these from the manifest.
- site.webmanifest: a small JSON file with your site name, colors and icon list.
Tips
- Put all files in the root folder of your site, next to index.html, and paste the code into the head of every page.
- Simple, bold shapes read best at 16 px; fine text and thin lines disappear.
- Browsers cache favicons hard. Open the icon URL directly or use a private window to see a change.
- The theme-color tag tints the browser bar on Android in your background color.

Frequently asked questions
Which favicon sizes do I need?
A favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 px, a 180 px apple-touch-icon and 192 and 512 px icons for Android cover current browsers and phones.
Is my logo uploaded?
No. The icons are drawn and packed in your browser.
Can I use an SVG?
Yes. SVG, PNG, JPG, WebP and GIF are accepted; a square image of 512 px or more gives the sharpest result.
Why is the Apple icon not transparent?
iOS fills transparent areas with black, so the 180 px icon always uses your background color.
My new favicon doesn't show up.
Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Open the icon address directly, clear the cache or try a private window.
