How it works
- Press play to animate the countries with the largest military budgets from 1960 to 2025. Bars resort every year with smooth animation.
- Drag the year slider to freeze any moment, or change how many countries are shown.
- The full data table ships with the page, so the ranking works even offline.
Good to know
- Values are military expenditure in current US dollars, not adjusted for inflation or economy size.
- Countries without a published figure for a year are left out of that year.
- Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Where do the numbers come from?
Military expenditure in current US dollars from the World Bank indicator MS.MIL.XPND.CD, which republishes SIPRI estimates, built into the page for the years 1960 to 2025.
Is this a ranking of military strength?
No. It ranks money spent, not troops, equipment or capability. Spending is an official, comparable measure; firepower indexes are not official statistics.
Why are some countries missing in early years?
Countries without a published figure for a year are left out of that year, and the former Soviet Union has no series in this dataset. Ranks in those years cover only countries with data.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The full table ships with the page, so the race and the year slider work without a network.
