How it works
- Press play to animate the most populous countries from 1960 to 2025. Bars resort every year with smooth animation.
- Drag the year slider to freeze any moment, or change how many countries are shown.
- The full data table ships with the page, so the ranking works even offline.
Good to know
- Values are midyear estimates of everyone living in each country, regardless of citizenship.
- Numbers use the short form of your page language, such as millions or billions.
- Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Where do the numbers come from?
Total population from the World Bank indicator SP.POP.TOTL, built into the page for the years 1960 to 2025. Newer years appear after the Bank publishes them.
When did India pass China?
In this World Bank series India's population moves ahead of China's in 2021 and the gap widens after that. Estimates get revised, so other sources may give a different year.
Does it count everyone living there?
Yes. It counts all residents regardless of legal status or citizenship, as a midyear estimate.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The full table ships with the page, so the race and the year slider work without a network.
