The three modes
- X% of Y: a part of a whole. 20% of 58000 is 11600 — discounts, tips, taxes.
- X is ?% of Y: a share. 29 out of 58000 is 0.05% — rates, proportions, scores.
- % change: from an old value to a new one. 50000 → 58000 is a 16% increase — price changes, growth rates.
Tips
- A result over 100% in “X is ?% of Y” mode simply means X is bigger than Y.
- Percent change divides by the old value, so it can't be calculated from 0.
- Don't confuse percent with percentage points: 20% → 25% is +5 points but +25%.
