How it works

Passwords are built from your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (Web Crypto). Every character type you tick is guaranteed to appear at least once, and the result is shuffled so its position can't be guessed.

Strength (bits) = length × log₂(number of possible characters)

How strong is strong enough?

  • Under 40 bits: weak — can be guessed quickly by modern hardware.
  • 40–59 bits: fair — fine for low-value accounts with rate limiting.
  • 60–79 bits: strong — good for most online accounts.
  • 80 bits and up: very strong — suitable for email, banking and password managers.

Tips

  • Use a different password for every site and keep them in a password manager.
  • Length beats complexity: 16 random characters are far harder to crack than 8 with symbols.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it is offered.
  • Passwords are generated on your device and never sent or stored.

Standards and sources

  • Random values come from the Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), a cryptographically secure generator
  • Strength is estimated as entropy in bits, the measure used in NIST SP 800-63B guidance

Frequently asked questions

Is this password generator safe to use?

Yes. Passwords are created in your browser with the Web Crypto API, a cryptographically secure random source, and are never sent to a server or saved.

How long should a password be?

At least 12 characters for everyday accounts and 16 or more for email, banking and password managers. Length adds more strength than extra symbols.

What does "bits" of strength mean?

It is the entropy: each extra bit doubles the number of guesses needed. 60 bits or more is strong, and 80 bits or more is very strong.

Why exclude look-alike characters?

Characters like I, l, 1, O and 0 are easy to confuse when you read or type a password by hand. Excluding them lowers strength slightly, so add a little length.

Can I generate several passwords at once?

Each time you generate, four extra options are shown below the main password. Tap any of them to copy it.
